Caramel Chocolate Trifle

Ingredients:

For the Caramel Layer:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the Chocolate Layer:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 8 ounces dark chocolate, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

For the Whipped Cream Layer:

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Assembly:

  • 1 pound pound cake, cut into cubes
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Caramel Layer:
    1. In a medium saucepan, heat the sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until it melts and turns a deep amber color.
    2. Add the butter and stir until melted.
    3. Slowly add the heavy cream and salt, stirring constantly until smooth.
    4. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
  2. Prepare the Chocolate Layer:
    1. In a medium saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer.
    2. Remove from heat and add the chopped chocolate and butter.
    3. Stir until the chocolate and butter are completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
    4. Let cool to room temperature.
  3. Prepare the Whipped Cream Layer:
    1. In a large mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  4. Assemble the Trifle:
    1. In a trifle bowl or large glass bowl, add a layer of pound cake cubes.
    2. Drizzle some of the caramel sauce over the pound cake.
    3. Add a layer of the chocolate mixture.
    4. Add a layer of whipped cream.
    5. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of whipped cream on top.
    6. Sprinkle chopped nuts and chocolate shavings or cocoa powder on top for garnish, if desired.
  5. Chill:
    1. Refrigerate the trifle for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
